Buying a Sim Card in Slovenia in 2023

Traveling to Slovenia soon, planning your trip and thinking about the best way to get connected on your trip? Let me help you to avoid high roaming charges and slow overseas data roaming plans. In this guide I will tell you everything you need to know about buying a sim card in Slovenia with the best 4G/5G network in Slovenia, up to date sim card prices per August 2023, where to get a sim card, my recommendation and even information about international and e-sim cards for Slovenia.

The prepaid sim card business in some small European countries like for example Croatia, Denmark or Netherlands is not that big and there are very few options available. The same counts for when looking to buy a sim card in Slovenia.

Buying a local prepaid sim card is the first thing I do when I get to a new country and that is why on Traveltomtom you can already find more than 150 prepaid sim card guides from around the world: Greece, Italy, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Colombia, USA, New York, Cameroon, Kenya and so on.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid sim card advice. Bookmark this website!

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends an A1 sim card for Slovenia. They have very good 4G/5G network coverage and a good prepaid sim card deal.

Is Slovenia your first stop in Europe? Then get yourself a sim card for Europe online. You can find better deals in my article about the best Europe sim cards for travel in 2023 including free roaming across all EU countries. Slovenia sim cards are NOT good for traveling in Europe as they don’t include EU roaming. You can also look into international sim cards with global coverage.

However, the easiest way to stay connected when traveling abroad is an e-sim card.

E-sim cards for Slovenia

Traveltomtom recommends e-sim cards for traveling to Slovenia in 2023 as they make everything much easier. No need to swap physical sim cards anymore, no need visiting a store. You can arrange everything online within just a couple minutes. You are all set and you are ready to go! Check out the following Slovenia e-sim card deals:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $5 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $10 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $15 USD
  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $22.5 USD

Click here to directly order an e-sim card for Slovenia online or find more info. With an e-sim card you keep your own phone number from home.

You can also still buy a physical sim card for Slovenia online! These international sim cards are already pre-activated for you and after you order one online they get shipped to your home address before your trip. For $49.90 USD you get 20 GB and unlimited calling and texting in all of Europe. Click here to order an international sim card for Slovenia directly online.

Slovenia sim cards and EU roaming

Throughout this article you will find out that Slovenia sim cards are NOT the best for traveling in Europe. All the prepaid sim cards you can buy in Slovenia have no or very limited EU roaming included in their data packages. So for traveling in Slovenia these sim cards are good, but once you cross the border into Italy, Austria or Croatia they are useless.

Mobile internet operators in Slovenia

There are actually 4 mobile internet operators in Slovenia and for such a small country that is a lot:

  • Telekom Slovenia
  • Telemach Slovenia
  • A1 Slovenia
  • T2

I already quickly found out that T2 does not have any Slovenia prepaid sim cards. Therefore this research for finding the best Slovenia prepaid sim card is focussed on Telekom, Telemach and A1.

Best 4G/5G Slovenia network in 2023

In 2023 all tourist destinations in Slovenia are covered with a 4G phone signal but there is definitely a difference in network strength per provider.

Is there 5G in Slovenia?

Yes there is 5G in Slovenia in 2023. However, it is mostly concentrated around Ljubljana and Maribor at the moment.

Let’s check out the 4G/5G coverage maps in Slovenia and compare the mobile networks of the internet providers.

A1 Slovenia 4G/5G network map

Telekom Slovenia 4G/5G network map

Telemach Slovenia 4G/5G network map

From the above Slovenia 4G/5G network coverage maps we can clearly see that Telemach has a much weaker network compared to Telekom and A1. Therefore in my opinion Telemach is not the ideal prepaid sim card for traveling in Slovenia.

Where to buy a Slovenia prepaid sim card

When arriving at Ljubljana Airport there are no sim card vendors in the Arrivals Hall this is probably because hardly any intercontinental flights from outside of Aurope arrive at Ljubljana Airport. European sim cards mostly have free roaming in Slovenia so they don’t need to buy a Slovenia prepaid sim card in general.

When you get to Ljubljana city center there are multiple mobile internet shops around the city center. There is an A1 shop and a couple Telekom and Telemach shops around. Just type the by you preferred mobile operator in Google Maps and walk to one of the shops. Ljubljana is a small city, you can easily walk everywhere.

Unlike almost any other European country in Slovenia you do NOT need to bring a passport when buying a prepaid Slovenia sim card.

Convenience stores in Slovenia

You can also buy your sim card for Slovenia in the well known convenience stores and gas stations like Petrol, Big Bang, Harvey Norman, Mercator and Posta Slovenije. This is however not really recommended as the staff of these convenience stores or gas station have obviously no knowledge of these prepaid sim cards.

Prices prepaid Slovenia sim card in 2023

All prices and information below is updated per August 2023 and prices are in Euros: $1 USD = €0.91 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.10 USD.

Telekom Slovenia

A Telekom Slovenia sim card costs for tourists costs €8,50 and comes with €5 credit you can top up with the above data packages, for example:

  • 5 GB data for 30 days = €10

Data packages are valid ONLY in Slovenia, there is NO free EU roaming included. Neither are minutes/sms included, you will have to add credit to your prepaid sim card. Calls and texts costs €0.13 cents per minute/sms.

Although they have the best 4G/5G network in Slovenia their prepaid sim card deals are pretty limited, although you can kind of make your own. Find more info about Telekom Slovenia prepaid sim cards on their website.

Telemach Slovenia

The Telemach Slovenia prepaid sim cards for tourists are called Free 2Go

  • €3,99 = 500 units.
  • €6,99  = 10,000 units.

This means either 10.000 MB, 10.000 minutes, 10.000 sms or a mix of this. All only for use in Slovenia, free EU roaming is limited to 3.900 MB.

This sim card is pretty flexible for short term stay in Slovenia and €6.99 for 10 GB data is not that bad at all. But remember they have the weakest 4G/5G network in Slovenia. For more info check the Telemach Slovenia website.

A1 Slovenia

When buying an A1 Slovenia sim card you pay €6 and get €5 credit. You can then top up with different data packages:

  • 2 GB data for 3 days = €5
  • 7 GB data for 30 days = €10
  • 15 GB data for 30 days = €15

Data is valid ONLY in Slovenia. For more info check the A1 Slovenia website.

Best Slovenia prepaid sim card in 2023

Comparing all the Slovenia prepaid sim card deals I can come to the following conclusions:

  • Telemach Slovenia sim card is very flexible.
  • The 4G/5G network of Telemach is small/weak.
  • Telemach allows limited EU data roaming, Telekom and A1 do NOT allow EU roaming at all

Because Telemach and A1 offer around the same prepaid sim card deal but A1 Slovenia has the better 4G/5G network we rate A1 as the best prepaid sim card in Slovenia in 2023.
